"I found Betsy’s internship on Gumtree, it seemed perfect for me: a great way to banish boredom over the long summer and get experience in a creative environment. As I am incurably indecisive and still haven’t decided what I want to do after uni, a general internship like this one seemed to fit the bill.
I instantly fell in love with the Betsy Benn products, especially the radial products like the Story of Us and the Alice in Wonderland print. The first few days of my internship consisted of getting to know the products, learning how to do some artwork and other processes of the business, and of course meeting the lovely girls in the office! It was really inspiring to find out how the business had been built up from scratch, and I enjoyed listening to tales of Betsy’s creative and sometimes crazy ways to produce the raw artwork, my favourite using sugar on a vinyl record to get a distressed texture to come out in the photocopy! (warning: may damage your photocopier).
It was really nice to be part of such a close-knit and relaxed office, and I got to work with everyone individually, being (very patiently!) taught how to use illustrator and the artwork templates by Rachel, helping Ellie with the post and the dispatching process, and going on a photo-shoot with Mel for some new Christmas products. The photo-shoot was one of my favourite days on the internship as it was great to be in a real life photography studio and help out with setting up the shoot.I did everything during my two weeks at Betsy Benn from going out to buy glitter pens and Christmas decorations for the photo-shoot to creating a bespoke Destination print for Green and Blacks. Being arty, the thing I most enjoyed was doing some of the artwork and finding my way around Adobe Illustrator! It was definitely some of the best work experience I have had so far, I was made to feel welcome and always had varied tasks to do! I am now very tempted to buy my own print for my room… "

We thought for a long time about whether to have a break, how that would look, what kind of business we would come back to if we did and what our impact is on the other businesses we work with and our customers.
